Why Organic Matters



Coffee comes in many different options, from variety, to roast profile, to added flavors, but perhaps the biggest difference in your daily cup of joe is organic versus conventional beans. Many of us are choosing to live more organic lifestyles, from the activities we partake in to the produce we grab off the shelves in our local store, and choosing organic coffee does make a difference.

Producing this much coffee and keeping up with the staggering demand is no easy task, which has resulted in farmers developing new methods to increase their yields. However, these new methods of farming are taking their toll on humans as well as the environment. Conventional coffee crops are covered in synthetic pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers resulting in it being one of the most heavily chemically treated crops in the entire world. This chemical overload not only affects the farmers working on the crops, the surrounding communities that now have chemical residue in their water and air, but also the consumer that is brewing these beans for their daily cups.

But wait, there’s more…

Conventional coffee crops have been developed to grow in direct sunlight, where they can be grown more densely and harvested more easily. Forests are cleared away to create room for these crops and the natural ecosystems that were once there are destroyed. The lack of natural ecosystem drives out the birds and lizards, allowing the insect population to grow rampant, resulting in higher levels of synthetic insecticides and fertilizers. The lack of tree cover means increased water runoff as well. The rainwater washes soil away, which erodes the fields, hinders future growth, and causes the chemicals used on the crops to enter local water supplies.

But there’s hope…

Organic coffee never comes in contact with synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides and fertilizers. The coffee crops are shade grown where the natural ecosystem can thrive. Birds and lizards act as natural insecticides/pesticides and natural flora on the ground acts as fertilizer. Thus, no forests are destroyed, no wildlife is harmed, no emissions enter the air and no chemicals enter water supplies. These natural farms are also more resilient to changing weather patterns due to climate change, making them safer investments for farmers and the populations they support. By choosing organic coffee you are making a difference for not only your own health, but for ecosystems and populations around the world.
